The Tri Glide Ultra is Harley-Davidson's three-wheeled touring platform: two wheels up front carrying the fairing and dash, one wide drive wheel in back, with a reverse gear and no balancing required at a stop. It's built for riders who want the range and comfort of a full touring bike, or who can no longer manage a two-wheeler's balance, without giving up long-distance capability. It shares its running gear with Harley's other Ultra tourers, so mechanically it inspects much like a Street Glide or Road Glide underneath, but the frame, suspension and three-tire setup are unique to the trike and wear differently. Check the reverse gear engages and disengages cleanly, since it sees real use on a heavy vehicle that can't be muscled backward by hand. Inspect all three tires for even wear; the trike's geometry can wear the outer edges of the rear tires unevenly if the bike has been ridden hard into corners or the alignment has drifted. Because the whole machine is heavier than a standard tourer, pay closer attention to brake pad and rotor wear than you would on a two-wheeled bagger, and check the frame and axle housings for corrosion if the bike has seen winter riding. It exists for a specific and real need: riders who want touring range and comfort but cannot or would rather not balance a two-wheeled motorcycle at a stop. It is wide, it does not lean into corners the way a two-wheeler does, and it should be test ridden with that difference in mind rather than judged against a standard bagger's handling, since the two are answering different questions. Licensing rules for a three-wheeled motorcycle vary by state, and some do not require the motorcycle endorsement a two-wheeled bike would, which is part of the appeal for riders coming to it from a car rather than from another motorcycle. Check your own state's rule rather than assuming, since it is not consistent nationwide.
